Default Brrrr... Need new insulation

Do you think it would be a pain to put more insulation in your existing walls? I'm thinking there is something called "blown-in" insulation? Is this something that is easy to use? Do you just cut a hole in the wall somehow?

In order to blow in insulation, you have to make holes on the outside of the wall at intervals in order to fill up the spaces between the wall studs. The insulation is a lot better than it used to be too. It will settle some after a while so if you want to be able to add more, just put a temporary covering on the drilled holes in order to be able to uncover them again to add more insulation.

It might be a pain to do this at this stage but in the end it should be well worth it. I would imagine it would help on your heating and air conditioning bill too.

This is not too difficult to do, and you can rent the equipment to blow it in. The money you will save on energy costs will make it well worth it.

How much does it costs and how long does it take? I know some older homes might get a great boost of energy savings (and cash) from it but that would depend on how much the cost is to install or DIY.

Are you trying to redo your entire house or just a certain area? Sometimes if the spot is small enough you can get away with it for pretty cheap but if you are talking about a full house install its going to take some time and money.

We had our house done in a day. But we left the "plugs" in until we got the house siding on. The house was about 30 years old when we had it done and it did settle a bit. When we had the siding put on, we also put sheet foam insulation on the house under the siding. It made a huge difference.

It is definitely worth it. It's a wonderful way to help your energy conservation efforts from the home. It's one of the most efficient things you can do to seal in the heat in the winter and the cool air in the summer.
