Default Chinese-made drywall ruining homes, owners say

Officials are looking into claims that Chinese-made drywall installed in some Florida homes is emitting smelly, corrosive gases and ruining household systems such as air conditioners, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says.

The Florida Health Department, which is investigating whether the drywall poses any health risks, said it has received more than 140 homeowner complaints. And class-action lawsuits allege defective drywall has caused problems in at least three states -- Florida, Louisiana and Alabama -- while some attorneys involved claim such drywall may have been used in tens of thousands of U.S. homes.

Homeowners' lawsuits contend the drywall has caused them to suffer health problems such as headaches and sore throats and face huge repair expenses.

Wouldn't it be nice if laws required companies that sell foreign products, to bear the blame, and expense of replacement?

I bet that would make these companies, who are probably charging the same price for all of their drywall, to preserve an unreasonable profit margin in some cases, think twice about selling products that aren't made in the USA!

I had not heard about the bad drywall.

About a year or so ago, it seemed like every few weeks there would be another report of a tainted product from China involving either high levels of lead or unsafe food products.

Yes, Taggart, it's probably grossly unfair of me, but my first thought reading the thread was ,"Good grief, do they make anything that's not tainted???!" Shouldn't governments be inspecting every product that comes from China?

What I don't get is don't these same companies sell their product to their own people within China? I mean don't they care about the people in their country that could get sick. It seems like everytime you turn around you see more of this kind of thing.

Well, whatever company it was sold the baby formula tainted with melamine to their own people. I thought I heard that someone was executed over it, and even though I'm against the death penalty, I didn't shed any tears about it.

Yes, chinese dry wall was a huge problem in my neighbor in Florida. My town was in the news for months. There were law suits after law suits and people getting sick. In fact, the house we just bought a year ago had a disclosure of proof that all the chinese dry was out and replaced. A lot of investors came in and bought homes, did the remodeling, then re-sold. I felt sorry for the original builders because they were held responsible. It wasn't their fault because at the time they weren't able to buy dry wall in the USA because of no supplies.
