I have a flat roof on a back room and it's leaking when it rains. It's starting to turn a rusty red along the leaking crack line on my ceiling so I'm thinking something is going on that I better take care of. My initial thought is to go on the roof and put down a patch with tar where the crack appears to be. Beyond that I'm not sure what to do next. I'm hoping my fellow forum members will have some great ideas whether it's what to do or even what not to do.

I had a problem when I first bought this house. I went up, and did my best to find the leak, but could never find the exact source from the roof. I went to lowes and bought some roof sealer. I didn't do any tar or anything, just the roof sealer. I forget which kind, but it ends up white in color after it dries. I haven't had a problem in the years since. I do need to seal it again though. I was told every 3-5 years to re-seal it.
