Default Paint - swatches and styles

We went to pick up color swatches (repainting bathroom, kitchen and daughters bedroom this spring/summer) and I could not believe all the colors there are to choose from! I also can’t believe the variety of paints and the purpose. So help me out please, do I have to use kitchen paint for the kitchen? Do I want flat, satin or semi-gloss and what is the difference between the 3? I even saw white ceiling paint – can’t you just use white paint? Decisions!

Yes I agree the amount of colors is a big decision but also wonderful. I recently bought my first home and so I have gone through some of these same thing. I don't like flat paint personally because I don't like the way it feels. When you rub your hand on it I think it feels chalky. It has no shine to it whatsoever. For small spaces and accent walls always go with semi gloss or satin. I don't think there is a whole lot of difference between semi-gloss and satin. I think it's just your taste. You can always ask for a sample, paint a part of the wall or dab it on the top and see which you like best! I learned if you have a dark room go with the highest gloss you can to reflect light.
