Question Painting kitchen cabinets

I do not have the money to replace my dated kitchen cabinets, so I am going to paint them. Has anyone ever done this? My mother had her cabinets painted a dark sage green color and you would never tell they were painted. They look custom and high end. Unfortunately, her handyman moved and I can't ask him for advice.

It really depends on what your cabinets are made of because if they are coated in a veneer and are particle board instead of wood repainting them won't work. We have that problem, so we have to replace them unfortunately.

From what I can tell, my cabinets are real wood. I think I know the cabinets you are talking about, and I actually have them in the kitchen in our finished basement. You are right in that they cannot be painted. I've seen them painted on decorating shows like Designed To Sell, but you have to wonder how long they actually look nice. My guess is just until after the big reveal.

If you are sure they are wood, then all you need to do is sand down the first layer of sealant and then paint them your intended color. You will probably want to put some sort of top coat or sealer over top of that though.

How about just buying new cabinet doors, or is this too pricey, too? Though, I would paint them if they are real wood. I wish I could paint mine. I have the kind that FancyPants is talking about. They are particle board and laminate. Awful!

We've done this before. Ours were wood though. My hubby took all the doors off and sanded them down good first. We then put a couple coats of fresh paint on them and they looked nice.

I'm going to paint my cupboards this winter too. I'm going to paint them Green - but country green. I have seen a lot of people do this and it looks wonderful. Just be patient! Everyone I know that did this, took off the doors - sanded them and then painted everything.
