I was talking to a friend earlier today about trying yet again to get the house the way I want it, how long does this normally take? Honestly, at the rate I am going it may never get done, it seems like a never ending battle.

Houses can be a never-ending battle, but they are definitely a lifetime of improvement and care. Try to enjoy the process where you can.

By the time you get it to the way you want it times will have changed and it won't be the way you want it anymore. You just have to keep heading in the right direction.
