Default Does anyone actually have an automated house?

I have always admired the homes I see shown on T.V. The ones that are fully automated. I wish I had something like that but it seems like a huge and costly project. Does anyone here actually have an automated house?

I was actually reading an article about this type of thing and something called the Smart Grid. Basically by using it you are inviting people to know exactly what you are doing at any given time. No thanks, I am too private a person for that!

I've heard of automated houses, but I'm not sure I would want one. I sure wouldn't want one if people would know what I'm doing inside my own home, but I don't understand how that would happen. If you remember where you read the article, Lizzie, I'd like to read it.

About as close as I have come is having a home server to store music, videos, documents and other things to share between computers.

I would love to do more, but just do not have the time nor the money right now.

I'm not sure what you mean by automated house but it sounds a bit scary. It reminds me of that Disney movie called Smart House where the computer manifested itself into a woman because she got jealous a new woman was becoming a part of the family.

Besides the expense of implementing all that automation, what is the cost of fixing it when something breaks? That's the part I really wouldn't want to deal with.

I wouldn't do it. I have been in a home where everything was controlled by computers and it wasn't something I would like to do. What if the electricity was off. You wouldn't be able to turn on the lights on your own or even flush the toilet. This house had too much under the control of the computer, named Alexander.

I haven't seen that one. I was thinking about a movie that I can't remember the name to where the spaceship (or submarine?) gets a personality and takes over. I know there was a Futurama that parodied it.

i would not want everything, but some things. I would like to be able to have music to be played from a central location in any room, and movies.

Being able to control some other things would be nice, like A/C, although I do not change it often. I would find having a light or two being controlled remotely, so when I come home at dark to an empty house, I can turn the hallway light on before I open the door.

A camera system would be nice too, so I can keep an eye on things when I'm away, and if someone breaks in I can hopefully catch them on video.

Some other lights would be nice to be on remote control option.

It would be nice to have some things automated, but I guess I'm just old fashioned enough to want many things under my control. My dream is one day living off the grid and having solar panels do the work exclusively. That would be an awesome dream come true for me.
