Do you use any type of home security system? If so how do you like it. I've thought about putting one in my current home. But to be honest, I doubt I will here. The next house maybe. My brother used to do home alarms for a living so I have someone who has the knowledge that I can bug. I was thinking of putting in the shatter glass windows when I re-did my windows, but then I saw the cost of them.

yeah i have one.. it's called 'Chris' my nosy next door neighbour.. a cat can't walk to our front door without her spotting it... I have double locks on front and back doors, and locks on the windows. Security lights at the back (which are a bit of a pain to be honest as everytime so much as a sparrow flits in front of the sensors all the floodlights go on!)

I have a dog who does a very good job of putting off potential intruders, she is a lovely gentle dog but she doesn't like people coming to the house if she doesn't know them. She has a loud bark and she sounds very frightening. I have more conventional security measures too, but not an alarm.

I've noticed that dachshunds (wiener dogs) are very capable of putting up enough noise to scare away a potential burglar without being huge or dangerous to children at all.

I'm guilty of doing the sticker thing... putting up stickers saying my house is protected by a well known system, and really- it's just stickers. I figure, most people would just pick a house that's an easier target, rather than test one that says it's alarmed. I know theives know that trick... but... it's better than nothing. That, along with some cheap contact alarms that make a loud noice when the contact is broken that I picked up at a department store... and dogs, I think I'm ok. I hope! (Knocks on wood!)

you are probably correct jessie.. and that sort of sticker thing is enough to scare off the casual thief... they may not believe it, but think, why bother finding out when the house next door hasnt got a sticker... won't do you much good against a determined expert though.

I live at the end of a one mile dirt road and on most days 4 wheel drive is required to get here. I'd have to have something pretty spectacular at my house to motivate a burglar to go that far! But I have had alarms in the past at other houses. The last one had speakers on the outside of the house alerting the intruder that the police had been called, etc and the thing used to malfunction regularly by going off unecessarily and then broadcasting it's warning in Spanish. To say the least, my neighbors were not my biggest fans.

I wanted to install a security system but it just was too expensive. You're looking at $500 for the initial set up, then a monitor fee of around $8 a week. Someone pointed out to me if your house does get broken in to by the time the Police get there the robbers would've fled. Which is true so I don't think there's much you can do other than my two Jack Russell's protecting my property!

When we had our current home built we had my father install an alarm system. He spent around $400 on all of the wiring and interfaces, and didn't charge us since he said it was our housewarming gift. It's nice to have for when I am out of town and my wife is home alone.
