Default Internet headaches

I've been fighting with my internet/network connection all night. I have no idea what the issue could be. I've reset everything, I've restarted everything....I've even unplugged and reconnected everything. This is the first time today I've been able to connect. I work remotely, so now I'm backed up in several projects that I'm doing. I'm thinking I might need a new router since it only started working after I unplugged all the connections and then reconnected everything. Either that, or the actual wire is bad and needs to be replaced. Major headache!

I hate when stuff like that happens. I'm not a computer geek at all, but if the internet started working after you disconnected everything, then I would start with fresh cables. One little kink in the wire and things don't work right.

Have you called your service provider to see if it is a problem on their end? You may think it's your issue, but there may be an outage that you aren't aware of. At the very least, they can run a test of your line and try to troubleshoot with you. I hope it gets fixed!

Try to replace the wire first and then try the router, is it a rented one? We had issues with a few of those too, they re-provision them but never actually fix them all.

Sometimes places will go ahead and re-rent other routers like reker mentioned but never fix them, it happened with us a few years back using Cox Communications. When they ended up getting the broken one back they chucked it out and wrote up a small check for out "troubles" after we complained about it for a year.

I had the same issue with my internet connection before. When I felt like I had already tried all forms of troubleshooting and that my technical knowledge no longer worked, I had to call the service provider to check it out.

If its your ISP there is nothing you can do. Most times when you call up they will walk you through resetting everything and if its not a defective device its their connection to you. Have you asked them to try and replace the router?

The actual wire needs to be replaced - that has been one of the worst problems for me when it happened because it is usually the last thing you suspect in that moment.

I feel for you. I had a huge disagreement with a service provider about my internet. It kept dropping off and they blamed it on my PC. Anyway, it transpired that it was down to a problem with the router so they sent me another one.

We had the exact same problem the other day. All we had to do was reboot the router. A lot of times they just get bogged down for whatever reason and rebooting is all that is needed. My hubby is a computer tech so I guess I am lucky that I don't have to deal with that kind of frustration.
