Well that said, you may have been able to get it fixed by Apple. They do have a repair program, and also do battery change outs. Its a lot cheaper than replacements.
Another thought, is that you could try buying a refurbished one, which sometimes costs slightly less than a brand new one. Maybe your daughter could save up for this for her new one? )
