Default Wireless Internet

How many of you have wireless internet in your house? It's rather easy to set up if you just grab a wireless router from a local tech store. It has saved me the need to run so many wires (we have 3 computers in my house), and now friends can come over with their laptops and have internet access. My boyfriend also uses the wireless connection to play PS3 games worldwide

I just feel so much safer knowing that less wires = less fire hazard!

How much does a wireless router cost? I would love to be able to use my laptop in my bedroom. There are a lot of sites I visit and a lot of fan fiction I read on the internet. It would be great if I could use this as my bedtime reading! Is it hard to install?

I bought a LinkSys one from OfficeMax for about $50 I think. It came with software that I installed on my computer and guided me step-by-step through setting up the wireless router. It was very easy, but after it was all over I found out that I could've just plugged my internet cord into the thing and my laptop would have picked up the wireless internet regarless, lol. The setup is only needed if you want to make it a "secure" network that needs a pass key so that your neighbors can't mooch off of your internet with their laptops

I heard if you don't put a lock on wireless internet anyone living close by can 'tap' in to the connection! Has anyone heard this before?

Yes, Mel, I've heard that there are security issues with wireless. I don't know if that's accurate, but it's what I've been told. Maybe someone who has it can shed some light on this.

Yes they can. I've had the laptop on before when my husband was driving down the interstate and the wireless LAN keeps picking up various signals. I don't know why people don't put a password on theirs. Anyone could hack them if they wanted to without them having a password on the wireless router.

When I first moved into my house a few years ago I was able to pick up a wireless connection during the day. I think it was the bank up the street. lol I don't have wireless but I have cable.

It's pretty easy to set up the password, too; at least it was with the LinkSys system I bought. Just pop the CD the router comes with into the computer, follow the on-screen setup instructions, and voila!

I'm not very savvy as to computer hacking, but I do generally pick up wireless signals from all over. My computer is a MAC and so it automatically scans and lets me know when it finds something. For our wireless at home, Verizon actually provided us with a password that we can't change.

Wireless has to be one of the best things that has come along for home networks. I have a wireless system set up at home. The set up is password protected and only specific computers are allowed to join based upon the network cards MAC address.
