Ants everywhere

Ants have become a nuisance at home, they are everywhere, but I find that they eat out the root of the trees in the garden. Is there a remedy that I use on them without harming my food and flowers.

One good remedy to get rid of ants is to pour boiling water into their home, making sure that the boiling water gets to the queen.

What's the best way to find out where the queen is? I have tons of ants running through my lawn and I don't want to use anything toxic because my kids play on the lawn.
