Default Anyone thinking of seeds yet?

In a month or so we're going to be starting the seeds indoors for this year's garden. We had a rather light year last year with lots of tomatoes, several different kinds of peppers, and strawberries. This year, we'll definitely be adding cucumbers and zucchini, but I haven't decided what else yet.

I just ordered some seeds. Some do not ship until march though.

I also created cards to attach to poles so we know what are in each row. The wife was having a hard time last year know what was what, so I hope this will help.

I'm going to start in late feb if the weather is going to stay on the warmer side.

As far as what I'm growing. This is on the list:
Peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, corn, watermelon, okra, honeydew, cantaloupe, squash, pumpkins, beans, eggplant, horseradish, sweet potatoes, potatoes, sunflowers, zucchini, asparagus and who knows what else will get added.

I think we will try our hand again at asparagus - have not been lucky with that. You have to plant that on it's own right?

We plant mostly everything from a plant - not seed. I thought we might try to start our own seeds this year though. It's still way too cold to start though.

When are you supposed to start your seeds indoors? I have never tried this either, we have always bought plants. I live in NY so I think it might be too soon to start.

Asparagus I will be planting in some planting boxes I built. They will year after year. But I think they take a year off between growing, not sure. I know most stores will sell the Jersey variety and it takes a year to produce after being planted.

I start seeds in growing containers in Feb here. If you want to go thrifty, use the plastic that chickens come in from the stores when you buy them cooked, the kind with the black bottom and clear lid.

That depends on your area. We had snow in April in NY. Florida April is late to get started. I start in growing kits usually mid-late feb.

Jason, I'm curious about your peas and beans. First, what kind of beans? Second, both plants are creepers, yes? Do you plant them with a trellis?

Provider - Bush
Butterbeans - Soy
Rocdor - Bush
Maxibel - Bush
Red noodle - Pole - Yard Long
Carson - Bush
Gita - Pole - Yard Long
Sugar Snap Peas
Snow Sweet Peas
Super Suger Snap Peas
Sugar Ann Peas

They will grow up a trellis, string or chain link fence. They are ok when it comes to providing shade to veggies that like a little shade.

Wow, that's a quite a list! Thanks for the information. I never thought about using them for shade, so that's a handy little tip. We get so insanely hot here in the summer and have no shady spots on our property that we have a problem with some of the plants burning up. Maybe beans and peas will help.

Well we are in Florida. So it gets really hot here. You will need to shade the peas/beans though too. I really haven't found any veggies that can truly take the heat here, so I use a cloth to shade them.
