Default Bad landlord

I have a landlord who does not care for the front or back lawns. Our building has 4 homes and the landlord lives on the bottom. There are spiderwebs all over the bushes you have to walk between to get to the doors. The lawn looks terrible. Some days I feel like going out and taking care of things myself but she'd probably get offended.

I think everybody has had at least one bad land lord. I have actually paid for yard work as part of my rent and had to still do it on my own. The owner would send out somebody once a month, usually right after I had already mowed and pulled weeds of course.

Was any thing written up in your rental agreement about lawn maintenance? You might just try mentioning it to him a few times to see if he gets anything done. If he doesn't then I would at least have to get down the spider webs and keep that area clean myself.

Even if there is nothing in the rental agreement I think if it's an apartment where the landlord also lives, it should be taken care of. I think it also depends on the division of yard. If each person has their own section then it makes sense to take care of it yourself. If it's a common area I think it should be the landlord's duty to have it taken care of.

I would just politely ask your landlord, if she needs help caring for the lawn. Maybe, by being nice, she will get the idea. If she seems really mean, I would just clean the area. If she says anything, just tell her you were bored.

There are reasons why you continue to live there. Perhaps it is cheap rent in a good location? Do what Lola suggests, politely talk to your landlord and ask her if she would like help caring for the yard. If she gives you a hard time about it then move. She may find it difficult to re-rent the apartment if the yard is in such disarray.

I think that's the best solution. The yard is a community yard in front of the building. The rent is affordable and I have a lease. I guess being polite and asking is a good idea. Hopefully she gets the hint and doesn't expect me to start doing all the work.

I would go out and clean the bushes! I wouldn't want people coming to my place and having it look like that. You could ask her too, perhaps she doesn't care or maybe she is using the webs for decorations!

This is one reason why having an HOA is great. I came across something a guy mentioned on a website when I was checking our random HOA fees and what comes along with having them.

Quote:
My HOA gets under my skin sometimes. Whenever it does, I drive through a part of town that doesn't have them. A few blocks of houses with cars up on blocks in the driveway, refrigerators on front porches, color schemes so loud you can hear them over the car stereo, and lawns overflowing with fake deer and birdbaths, and I forget whatever it was that was bothering me.
