Default Garden Status 2012

I thought it may be fun with the fellow gardeners here if we kept a little journal of our garden for this year. We can all see how we do together and maybe help each other.

This month I built 5 new main growing boxes. This will go along my chain link fence in the vegetable garden area. The hope is to help control the grass from growing into the garden. They are all 10 feet long. Two boxes are 1.5 feet wide, 3 are 1 foot wide. Made out of cypress wood so they are pest/termite resistant. Still need to level them. The 1 foots have 6 inch boxes between currently that I will plant either grape plants, marigold , or marigold & grape plants. I also put one foot boxes inside the 10 foot sections of the one foot boxes. Once I get it all done I will take pictures. They are 10 inches high. My goal is plant "permanent" plants in them. Asparagus and potatoes growing in hay in them. There is still another couple of boxes that I need to pick up lumber for to build before pictures.

The winter crop is coming in good. I picked most of the carrots. We got a few small heads of broccoli. With the heat we are having some went from nothing to a small head and then to flower when we were away. Cabbage is getting some heads along with the lettuce. We also got some kohlrabi which was my first time eating and it was good. We put it in some salad.

Blueberries are going strong still in the flower bed. I'm thinking of trying to put the strawberries in 8 inch pvc tubes to keep them off the ground. Some people though are saying any PVC will work, others are saying food grade PVC is needed. Either way the squirrels are getting the strawberries on the ground.

That is about it so far this year. I may try and get some horse manure to put in the empty garden area and get it ready for growing soon.

I can't add to anything yet, as it's snowy here. I am not sure when we will start the seeds in the house. It's something new this year. We usually plant from plants. I hope more people post to this so we can keep track. Perhaps you could sticky it or something so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle of posts here.

I have my map of where everything is going to go as soon as it warms up enough to plant. I will probably be starting seeds as soon as I get back from my vacation in 2 weeks.

We have our garden mapped out too but nothing is planted yet. How big will your garden be OCD? What will you be starting from seed? I've very interested.

We are just deciding what to do after the storms from last year. We've taken down some trees and still have places in the yard that need filling in. I don't know where or what kinds of vegetables I want to plant, but our yard is small, so I'm limited. Flowers may be the way I head.

Garden is going strong right now. Got about a dozen cucumbers so far, a handful of beans, and a couple of okra's already. Tomatoes are still green but coming in, and peppers are growing. Corn is getting attacked, but doing ok. Starting to see some of the melons coming to fruit too.

I was given some trellis and I am attempting to get tomatoes and beans to grow up it with some of the cucumbers. Not sure how well the tomatoes will grow up it, but it is a lot less expensive then buying cages.

I am down to what is known as a kitchen garden. This week I will plant 4 tomato plants, 6 hot peppers, 1 or 2 cucumbers and 1 or 2 hills of squash. My days of big gardening are in the past. I have noticed many more gardens around this year. I think it's due to the economy though.

Oh my goodness, we have not even started yet!! Right now we are finishing up all of the paperwork (every week another stack of papers) for the house remodel and the loan we are doing, it has been a nightmare. Once this is settled and work starts we can actually get going on the landscaping.
