Default Orchids

As I have said in my previous posts about my mom being fond of plants, I have to say that the plant that I admire the most are her orchids. They are beautiful when they bloom having different colors and sizes. She takes a great deal of time to take care of the orchids.

Do you have orchids in your home? What kind of orchids do you have?

I have no flowers in my home unless you could the stuffed bear I got years ago from someone special that had a crystal like rose attached to it. My sinuses do bother me sometimes and spring is really when it kicks in the worse but avoiding flowers in the home is safe for me.

My sister grows some orchids and yes, they are really beautiful. The most appealing part of an orchid is its labellum. Do you notice that the labellums often resemble certain insects?

I notice that as well but I think it can be seen only on some kind of orchids and not all of them. I like the combination of colors that the orchids create. I don't know how my mother does it but sometimes she group the orchids together and they produce different types of colors in one bunch.

I've always thought that orchids are one of those finicky, hard to care for flowers. I try to keep all of my indoor plants as low maintenance as possible since I don't have the greenest thumb.

I can imagine how beautiful they are in groups. What is your favorite orchid? My sister has a dendrobium lindleyi and I really like it. I think it is the most showy orchid I have ever seen.

I don't think so. Orchids are not hard to care for. They need only low maintenance. In their original habitats (in tropical zone), they even grow as wild flowers.

I agree with you webhouse that they only need a low maintenance. You just need to be consistently watering them and that is all they need. My mother told me that spraying them is better than pouring water on them.

Your mother is right. Using its roots, an orchid generally captures water vapor in the air rather than absorbing water poured on the planting media. It depends on the type of the orchid though.

My husband wanted to breed orchids a couple of years ago and he bought a book called "Orchids for Dummies" which is sitting in our bookcase gathering dust because he hasn't yet got around to reading it!
