This is something that I have wanted to do but just haven't figured it out yet. Does anyone here plant onions? If so, can you give me some tips, please? Like when do you plant the bulbs?
That is something I always wondered as well, so hopefully someone has some answers for us. I would love to plant some bulb vegetables like onions and potatoes if someone would share how.
I did onion sets this year. Here in Florida we grow them over winter as they enjoy cooler weather. You can start from seed though if you choose, but I have yet to go that way. They prefer sunny and good draining soil.
You can use onion sets if you start a bit earlier. Or go with the already sprouted plants if you wait until later. Generally onions will stand up to a bit of cold, but be sure the ground is not overly saturated and is well loosened up so the onions have room to grow.
We plant onions every year - we plant them the same time we plant the rest of the garden. The bulb package usually has directions on it. You want to plant them so that the roots grow down into the dirt.
Well I thank everyone for their input on growing onions. I think I will go out and find some bulbs and find a good place to plant them. Here's hoping for a nice bunch of onions in a couple months or so.
