Default To rototill or not?

I have always thought that you had to rototill the garden every year before planting and now I'm learning that this may not be the case. I read that if you rotate where you plant each year, that it's better for your crops.

We rotate the rows each year (move veggies in garden) but we also rototill each year too. I think we rototill to make it easier to plant and it also helps us get rid of the weeds that grew in the soil when the garden was done.

I did not rototill this year. I do find hand digging you can do better though. Most tillers only do a few inches, 6 if your lucky. They say 12 inches is best. So I've always been told hand tilling with a shovel is better. However, I think next year I will be renting a big tiller and see how it does.
