Default Tomatoes in Winter?

Does any one try to grow tomatoes in the winter time? Like in a big container pot. Maybe keep on the porch on nice days where it can get some sun and take it in if it's going to freeze? We have a nice window that gets lots of sun so I'm thinking on really cold days it could sit there and get plenty of light. I'm planning on giving it a try but just wondered if anyone else had tried it.

I've tried but it has never worked for me. I've heard of some people who have done it. They really have to supplement the light for the plants though, because winter sun just isn't strong enough for tomatoes. It's a lot of trouble but I'm sure it's worth it if you have the room.

I was thinking about this too, we love fresh tomatoes. I was thinking maybe having one of those fluorescent lights set where the tomato plants could get extra light from it so they would possibly do better? Guess it might be worth a try.

We get up to a foot of snow at times in the winter. There is a frost almost every night too even without snow. There is no way we could grow tomatoes here in Upstate NY in the winter. I wish there was a way!

Nope, we buy tomatoes in the winter from the grocery store. We do freeze and can a ton of tomatoes throughout the summer. So we have some for chili, soups and pasta. If we want fresh, we have to buy them.

I've known people who moved theirs inside, or in the garage during the winter. I've thought of making a small green house for summer plants in the winter. Just do not have the time, nor the money this year for that project.
