Maid Services: To Hire Or Not To Hire

July

It’s 6:00 pm, and you just arrived home after a long, grueling day at work. Your kids are crabby, your husband is hungry, and your house is in shambles. You have homework to check, dinner to make, and bills to pay. In a perfect world you could be Super Mom, and flex those “I can do it all” muscles. But in the real world, you’re just as crabby and hungry (and tired!) as the rest of the family. The last thing you want to do is scrub the kitchen floor, or vacuum up those crackers that seem to find their way into the depths of the carpet each day. You ponder the idea of hiring a maid service, and vaguely remember your co-worker talking about the benefits of having someone else do your “dirty work”.

But is hiring a cleaning service really worth the time and money? The answer depends greatly on your needs as a homeowner. (Keep in mind, maid services can be used for offices as well.) If you look at the pros and cons of hiring a service, you will find a fairly even scale. So in order to make your decision, you need to address several possible concerns.
Cost of service is one of the most important factors to consider. You must determine whether or not you have the extra money in your budget. This can be done while you research several companies in your area. Get an idea of which rooms you would need cleaned, and how often you would need the service. Many companies will adapt to the needs of the client, whether it be weekly, monthly, or for special occasions. Once you establish your needs, you can call businesses to get rough estimates of fees. If you do your research, you may find many reasonably priced companies. If you discover the costs aren’t easily built into your finances, you might want to consider hiring a friend or family member instead. Remember, hiring a cleaning service is supposed to lessen your stress load, not add to it!
Once you’ve calculated the fees into your budget, ask yourself why you feel a maid service would benefit you. Do you lack the skills to maintain the pristine appearance you desire for your home? Is your energy level too low to complete even the simplest tidying? These are great reasons for hiring that extra help. Reputable cleaning services have the expert knowledge (through extensive training) and the quality products to ensure that your home is cleaned to your full satisfaction every time. However, if you feel no one can live up to your expectations, you may be wasting your money.
One final point to factor into your decision making would be the issue of time. Do you simply want to incorporate more quality into your hours? Instead of dusting all those knick knacks you’ve collected, why not spend some precious moments playing with the kids, getting some shopping done, or finally savoring the warmth of a much needed bubble bath? Hiring a maid service can give you that extra treasure of time that you just can’t seem to find anymore.
Now that you’ve asked yourself the pertinent questions, your next step should be to do your homework. Check backgrounds of the companies that appeal to you, find out how long they’ve been in business. Ask if they are members of The Better Business Bureau, and double check everything they tell you! Look for companies that have comprehensive liability insurance, and employee accident coverage. If none of the businesses in your area appeal to your needs, don’t waste your time or money! Of course, a great way to hire a service would be through word of mouth. Ask around, you may be surprised at how many people you know already use a certain company.
If you measure the risks versus rewards, you most likely will conclude that hiring a professional who has a passion for cleaning is the best present you could give yourself, and your family.
